This workshop will focus on using the power of scent with aromatics for emotional and physical well-being for our animal friends.
Animals are like sponges, and some even take on or absorb energy from their environment and caregivers. They are extremely sensitive to their surroundings and the energetics that humans emit; including when we are stressed, anxious, overwhelmed or suffering from an illness or trauma. Our animal friends may suffer from many similar emotional and physical issues as their caregivers including anxiety and frustration, digestive and respiratory complaints, as well as skin care issues and so on.
I will share from my twenty-five years’ experience with working with both people and their animal friends’ helpful information about essential oils and flower essences that are effective to aid in comfort and restore balance of body-mind-spirt for you and your animal friends.
This demo/workshop is for the advanced and novice alike; opening doors, making connections, expanding on your personal knowledge base.

There is great benefit to understanding a broad range of approaches to blending essential oils for medicinal use.
Developing a deeper relationship with the chemistry of an essential oil can accompany us along our way towards understanding it’s therapeutic properties and safety considerations.
In this talk I will highlight a few of the individual components that are therapeutically complex and powerful on their own—and significantly present in a wide choice of essential oils.
Come join me and we will explore how understanding essential oil chemistry can add a new dimension to your blending.
Beyond Aromatics: How Essential Oils and Mother Tinctures Can Work Together to Heal Illness and Prevent Disease
All medicine is information! Plants hold the key elements for our survival and for much more: for our ability to thrive and even transcend. Plant medicine, gross or subtle, direct or indirect, is an alchemy of the five elements. The elements, incorporated into the plant structure are communicated to our cellular structure, digested, transformed and incorporated into body, mind and spirit.
Clinically, we are invited to powerfully and effectively use plants in their food, tisane, mother tincture, phytoembryotherapy, essential oil, or flower essence form. Each form carries a specific signature, a particular message. The alchemy of earth, water, metal, air and space are transmitted uniquely through each of these forms. Understanding the gifts offered by each form allows for the information to successfully restore balance.
- What are these unique signatures?
- What is the action of each signature on the human being and on treating their disease?
- How do we choose a plant form and when can we combine them for maximal impact?
- How do we know the individual physiology of our patient to make this decision even more precise?
Through a series of case vignettes which highlight aspects of the intake and physical exam using a systems biology approach, we will shine a light on individual physiology and patterns. We will explore the science and informational magic of plant medicine and how an effective, efficient treatment plan incorporates multiple plant preparations to address all levels of being.
Aromatic Roots: Exploration of Plant Morphology, Root Essential Oils, Pelotherapy, Preventing Inflammation and Enhancing Groundedness
Your health is determined by balance among nerves, hormones, and organ systems. This balance is affected by genetics, lifestyle, emotional state, and environment. Imbalances give rise to complaints that can be difficult to explain, much less treat.
This presentation will address common complaints such as anxiety, insomnia, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), malaise, fatigue, asthma and PMS. We will explore the essential oils most commonly used in clinical phyto-aromatherapy as well as sample treatments which can help resolve symptoms while addressing the underlying causes of the complaints. Handy practical use suggestions and recipes will be provided.
Pregnancy is an exciting time for an expectant mother as it brings many changes. One of these changes may need to be the mother’s use of certain essential oils because of how they can affect the baby.
In this workshop we will review what essential oils are safe to use in pregnancy and which ones may present safety concerns for both mom and baby. With this understanding we will then discuss the aromatic benefits during the stages of pregnancy; pregnancy, childbirth, and post-partum care.
Behavioral Endocrinology: How Phyto-Aromatherapy Can Change the Lives of Children and Families with Behavioral Problems
Behavioral problems in children is an area for which little is truly known or understood. We describe things like tantrums, aggression, introversion, anxiety, or even autism without truly understanding what they are. We don’t consider why children around two years develop tantrums, but not at other ages.
While these behaviors are often acceptable and sometimes even cute, in other circumstances they can be debilitating to a family or even dangerous to child or others. These behaviors sometimes reach a point where a child is medicated with powerful antipsychotic medications. The list of imbalances and related consequences can go on and on.
Herbalists around the world have known for centuries about the use of oils and plants for their powerful DIRECT effects on various parts of the nervous system. What has not been well recognized until now are the indirect neuroendocrine elements that create behavioral manifestations of children and how essential oils and other forms of phytotherapy can be used to address the underlying imbalances to resolve the witnessed behavioral issues. This lecture will help you understand the endocrine factors that can result in all types of behavioral manifestations in children, and will then discuss the appropriate use of phytotherapy to resolve the imbalances.
Oriental Medicine classifies the essential oil of plants as “Jing”. Jing is the essence, the origin, the concentration and the alchemy of substance. The conception of a healthy child engages our Jing. It is the mingling of male and female Jing essence combined with the cosmic energy of the stars, the planets and of Heaven, that creates the sacred clay vessel of life, our body. Essential oils are medicinally and poetically appropriate to nurture and foster fertility in the conceiving couple. This workshop will review the psychospiritual and neuroendocrine understandings of essential oils along with hands on clinical applications.

Using Aromatherapy to Empower Human Trafficking Victims to Make Friends with the Fear Inside of Them
This unique workshop educates advanced and novice students on how victims of human trafficking are being empowered through aromatherapy to live with the fear inside them with the use of aromatic mindfulness in food, movement, coloring, and sound therapies.
What you will do:
· Help assemble hygiene kits for victims of human trafficking who come to a secret drop-in center in Salt Lake City.
· Assemble inhalers to include in the hygiene kits.
· Create a bracelet which victims will package to sell in exchange for food gift cards.
What you will learn:
Aromatic therapies are currently being used as a beginning frame of reference for the limbic brain in harmony with heart rate variability to create a foundation for potential lifelong self-regulation.
The cultivation of mindful self-leadership is one of the roots of healing from traumatic stress and PTSD as one compassionately surveys one’s internal landscape with curiosity then steers in the direction of self-care. You will learn what essential oils were used for the first rescue packets Karey created that were sent to children orphaned after the earthquake in Nepal.
Alchemy and Medicine of the Soul
In this 3 hour lecture presentation we will contrast healing effects and safety issues. For example, wound healing research reveals that dilutions under 5% are not likely to be effective. However, a lower range of dilutions works best for most cosmetic and cosmeceutical applications. The use of undiluted essential oils in skin healing is rarely appropriate and can lead to adverse reactions. In part, this reflects differences between consumer use and clinical aromatherapy, but there are still broadly applicable safety guidelines.
It is notable that regulators do not weigh benefit against risk, and risk often seems to be exaggerated. We will discuss the trend to over-regulate essential oils in cosmetics, notably EU legislation, and contrast this with the many significant benefits of including essential oils in skin care and skin healing formulations.
We will discuss formulating for safety, including some keys to understanding the calculations involved. For example, maximum use levels for skin reactions need to be treated differently to maximum use levels for internal toxicities, because the reasons for dilution are different. We will explore some of the challenges of calculating safe dilutions for blends of essential oils. These ideas are based on, but go beyond, what is written in Essential Oil Safety 2e.
Bush Sense: The Therapeutic, Spiritual, and Shamanic Uses of Australian Essential Oils and Aromatic Compounds
The Great Southern Land – Australia, a special and unique land, the oldest continent on planet Earth. The flora of this ancient land shares that uniqueness and for the most part, is not well understood. Aside from Eucalyptus & Tea Tree, the aromatic plants of Australia have been largely overlooked by the rest of the world up until the last decade or so. In this colourful, informative and entertaining presentation, Mark will share his pick of the ever expanding palette of new aromatics from the “Land Down Under”.
He will outline the chemistry and the therapeutic applications, as well as the more esoteric uses of these uniquely “Aussie” aromatics – from subtle aromatherapy blends through to full on aromatic medicines, these powerful aromatics deserve their place in the world of aromatic dispensary.
Mark will also be giving a full day post-conference workshop on: Aromatic Medicine: Practical Applications using Chemistry and Therapeutic Strategies
